SCHENECTADY -- City police have agreed to forgo pay raises this year as the result of a new contract the City Council and Police Benevolent Association approved Monday.
By a 3-to-1 ratio, about 80 members of the Police Benevolent Association said ``yes'' to a package that freezes wages this year and phases in 3 percent increases for both 1998 and 1999. Earlier in the evening, the council rapidly did its part, passing the contract with no discussion.
City budget makers have been seeking to freeze pay raises for a year as a means of helping to contain costs, and they say other unions can expect similar offers. …
