Fed: National road toll reaches eleven
The national road toll for the Christmas-New Year holiday period has risen to 12 following
a third death in Victoria.
A man is dead after losing control of his car and hitting a tree at Gannawarra, in
north central Victoria.
A police spokesman says 41-year-old CHRISTOPHER LYONS of Barhead Street, Cohuna, died
at the scene after the accident at about 7am yesterday, but details of the accident only
came to light tonight.
The accident has taken Victoria's Christmas holiday road toll to three and the state's
annual road toll to 376, compared with 385 at the same time last year.
South Australian police say a 34-year-old Whyalla man was killed when his motorbike
ran off the road near Port Augusta, 280km north-west of Adelaide, about 11am (CDT) today.
Earlier, a 29-year-old male motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a car in the
northern Adelaide suburb of Enfield.
Police in Canberra reported that a 48-year-old man had been killed in a crash involving
a car and a semi-trailer near Queanbeyan.
The national toll tonight is three deaths each in South Australia and Victoria, two
fatalities each in New South Wales and Western Australia, and one each in Tasmania and
the ACT.
(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 24 to midnight January
