Fed: Howard says he opposes govt compo for Bali victims

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has rejected suggestions the government should pay compensation
to Bali bombings victims.

Mr HOWARD says Australia has already provided substantial assistance in the form of
medical, financial, travel and other support to victims and their relatives.

Mr HOWARD's told Brisbane radio 4BC he hasn't, in the past, supported the notion of
compensation -- and he doesn't see any reason to change his position on that.

In a report released yesterday, the Senate foreign affairs committee found that a terrorist
attack was not entirely unexpected.

But it found there was no clear warning in the form of specific intelligence which
would have prevented the October 2002 bombings which killed 202 people, 88 of them Australian.
