Crystal Research Associates Issues Executive Informational Overview on General Cannabis
Type: News
Crystal Research Associates announced that it has issued an Executive Informational Overview (EIO) on General Cannabis.
General Cannabis is a technology-driven company focused on developing a significant Internet presence in the medical cannabis industry using various technological platforms, search engine optimization (SEO) strategies, and proprietary software applications. General Cannabis does not grow, harvest, cultivate, possess, or distribute medical cannabis; rather, the company provides online services that help physicians, dispensaries, and patients within the industry build relationships and manage businesses.
In a medical setting, cannabis is used to relieve chronic or neuropathic pain, improve appetite, decrease nausea, and facilitate muscle relaxation. Cannabis is utilized under state law for medical purposes in 15 states and Washington, D.C., representing a portion of the estimated $35 billion to $45 billion cannabis industry in the U.S. Further, legislation is pending in 12 additional states.
As decriminalization of medical cannabis becomes more prevalent, multiple cannabis-related niche markets have emerged, including media, technology, management of medical clinics, merchant processing, and marketing. The company is one of the first publicly traded companies to support the medical marijuana market through each of these sectors. General Cannabis aims to lead each respective market sector, creating a standard of professionalism that it believes is largely absent in this industry. General Cannabis also seeks vertical integration opportunities within these sectors.
Crystal Research Associates is an independent research firm that provides institutional-quality, fee-based research to small- and mid- cap companies. The firm is led by Wall Street sell-side analyst Jeffrey Kraws, who is well known by the international financial media for his years of work on Wall Street and for providing analyses and developing long-term relationships on both the buy- side and sell-side.

Research and Markets Adds Report: Social TV and the Emergence of Interactive TV
Type: News
Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Social TV and the Emergence of Interactive TV" report to its offerings.
In a release, Research and Markets noted that report highlights include:
Social TV and the Emergence of Interactive TV - Report Explains Use of Relationships to Rebuild Fragmented TV Markets
In May 2010, Social TV was named one of the 10 most important emerging technologies by the MIT Technology Review, because it builds on relationships already established in Social Media Websites like Facebook and Twitter to rebuild fragmented TV audiences.
With Facebook now having over 500 million active users, and Twitter over 100 million, Facebook revenue is approaching US$1.1 billion in 2010, about double its 2009 revenue. Many consumers are using Social Media to connect with entertainment, like movies and TV, thereby creating the new product category called Social TV. Social TV is the extension of Social Media through the simultaneous use of a tablet or smartphone while watching TV.
Already, Nielsen has reported that 59 percent of U.S. Internet users browse the Internet and watch TV simultaneously. And this number is sure to grow, especially among younger consumers who have grown up with smartphones and prefer watching TV on laptops.
For now, Social TV is best with a second screen device like a PC, iPad or smartphone- because it allows for greater personalization and interactivity. Portable devices, like smartphones or iPads are popular among Social TV users because they already use Facebook or Twitter for communicating with others, and because users can message to many different devices. Social TV is about bringing social back into TV, said Jose Alvear, MRG IPTV Senior Analyst. TV has always been a social medium, but personal video devices and multiple TVs in the home have made it less social. Today, social networking sites are making it easy for consumers to get social with TV again.
Social TV's benefits for Content Owners, Consumers, Service Providers and Advertisers come in a variety of ways, including helping drive up TV ratings, rewarding consumers for watching TV, increasing brand engagement and even allowing for new rich media advertising opportunities.
The report also highlights the leading Social TV Vendors and Platforms, looking at possible business models, and showing how Social TV works with actual case studies from major entertainment brands and TV shows around the world. The report also includes detailed opportunities, risks and recommendations for Service Providers, advertisers and content owners.
Social TV Vendors include: Clicker, ClipSync, GetGlue, Hot Potato, KickFour, MediaFriends, Miso, Orca Interactive, Philo, Starling, Tank Top TV, Tunerfish, tvChatter and Vloop. Service Providers using Social TV include AT&T, BT, Comcast, France Telecom, Google TV, Microsoft (Xbox 360), Verizon and Virgin Media. Analytics involving tweets, comments, trends, and likes are also discussed.
As the popularity of Social Media has grown, a new interesting development has been the emergence of Social TV. Consumers all over the world are using Social Media networks like Facebook and Twitter to connect and converse with their friends and family. One of the most popular topics is entertainment and TV. This has led to Social TV, which is essentially the combination of Social Media with TV (for example, watching a program on TV while commenting with friends about the program on a laptop or an iPad). Although technology and social networks have given us this new term, the concept isn't new. TV has always been a social medium. Social TV is about bringing social back to TV via technology.
As indicated above, Social TV refers to the simultaneous use of Social Media tools while watching TV. Already, Nielsen reported in March 2010 that 59 percent of the U.S. population browse the Internet and watch TV simultaneously at least once per month. This number is sure to grow, especially among younger consumers who have grown up with smartphones and prefer watching TV on laptops. There are many types of interactivity possible from checking-in to TV shows, commenting on shows that are being shown live, to more sophisticated features like text chatting, polling, and even audio/ video chatting. Although it is still very early, Social TV has the promise of making TV interactive and social, like it was when a family sat together around the living room TV.
Why Social TV? The key is engagement. Social TV drives the level of engagement up, increases ratings, and can also help increase revenues via advertising. For Service Providers and Content Owners, the advantages are many: not only do consumers get a backchannel, but they can also have a very immersive and interactive TV experience. Consumers can use an iPad, for example, and watch their favorite TV shows. They also can comment and talk to their friends (and so much more) while still watching TV.
Social TV isn't for every person, nor for every TV show. It works best on shows that have a strong element of live TV, which encourage a greater immediate need to discuss what's happening as it happens. Popular live shows like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, are good examples because they have large audiences, and are unscripted reality shows with a weekly contest to draw viewers in over a TV season and which often use voting or polling from the audience. Sports and news are other good examples of the type of content that attracts Social TV.
Currently, there are many Social TV Vendors that have a wide range of features. Some just offer content recommendations, while others have a more integrated platform that works with the backend systems of Service Providers. Most Vendors have a separate app, usually an iPhone or Android app, to offer their functions, but others also have Websites, and even native iPad apps. In fact, the iPad has emerged as a second screen device for Social TV, where consumers can go and interact with others while simultaneously watching TV. Most Vendors believe that smartphones and tablet computers are the best platforms (compared with PCs and laptops) because they are portable and allow users to log in, so they can rate movies and comment on shows.
In this report, PC means all personal computers using online, which can be used for many platforms such as Mac, Windows and Linux.

FED:Abbott calls Barnett
SYDNEY, Aug 22 AAP - Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is taking advice from Liberal colleagues
about how to work his way into government.
Mr Abbott has remained in Sydney following Saturday's night dead-heat election battle,
the result of which remains unclear.
At his office in the CBD on Sunday morning, he phoned WA premier and Liberal mate Colin
Barnett to talk about negotiating a minority government.
Mr Barnett has had experience doing just that, during his 2008 election as premier.
No journalists were present during the call but it was filmed and photographed for
media distribution.
A spokesman from Mr Abbott's office did not return a call to provide additional information
about the discussion.
Australia remains on tenterhooks, with an election result likely to be days away.
At last count, the major parties were tied on 71 seats apiece, with four still in doubt.
Forming a minority government will depend most likely on which major party is able
to woo Australian Greens' Adam Brandt and three, possibly four, independents.
Mr Abbott may be conducting a press conference later on Sunday.

Fed: This is a difficult time to start ETS: Combet
CANBERRA, April 23 AAP - The global recession has made it a difficult time to start
emissions trading but Australia must press on to help fight global warming, the federal
government says.
Government MP Greg Combet, recently appointed to help Minister Penny Wong cover the
portfolio of climate change, said the global economic environment was tough for big business,
such as iron and steel producers.
"Of course it makes it a very difficult environment to introduce a reform as important
as this," Mr Combet told Sky News on Thursday.
But he said the government believed climate change was real and Australia must start
emissions trading.
"We are determined to press on."
Key business figures have strongly opposed the government's proposed Emissions Trading
Scheme, but Mr Combet, the parliamentary secretary for climate change, said the global
recession was the real problem for them.
He also said businesses told him they wanted the scheme passed to give them certainty.
Opposition emissions trading spokesman Andrew Robb said the scheme was "deeply flawed"
and would cost many jobs.
"It's going to cost tens of thousands of jobs, it's going to stop investment in its
tracks," he told Sky News.
Mr Combet indicated he did not think this was true.

What Australian newspapers say, Saturday December 1, 2007
AAP General News (Australia)
12-01-2007
What Australian newspapers say, Saturday December 1, 2007
SYDNEY, Dec 1 AAP - Reforming its political parties is vital to modernising the country,
The Weekend Australian says in its editorial today.
Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd started the process of reforming Labor almost a year
ago by imposing a pragmatic, economically credible, reformist agenda on the party. Now
he has further modernised the ALP by overriding the factions and choosing ministers based
on merit.
The newspaper says: "Australia cannot meet the challenges of the 21st century with
nine governments overlapping and operating at cross-purposes. Mr Rudd wants to eliminate
duplication, wastage and create uniform national markets, but state governments are bound
to resist initiatives that reduce their power."
Modernisation is even more vital for the Liberals, whose undisciplined, state-centred
structure has rendered it unelectable in every jurisdiction.
It needs a federalised, centralised structure to attract and select electable candidates
and impose discipline on rogues at state level, and get in touch with key constituents.
The Sydney Morning Herald says a spring election has put a spring in the nation's step
and cleared away cobwebs.
Kevin Rudd, by choosing his ministry instead of letting Labor's faction leaders do
so, has stamped his authority on the government early, modernising his party and doing
a service to the nation in the process.
The newspaper says: "The Rudd cabinet draws together youth and experience, left and
right, and men and women, including Australia's first woman deputy prime minister. It
is talented, and reflects the face of modern Australia."
Factionalism has now become the Liberals' problem. Brendan Nelson inherits a party
divided by ideology and factionalism. The Liberals need to reclaim the middle ground.
A strong, constructive opposition is the need of the hour to keep Labor honest.
"Democracy has won in a nation where ideas and ideals matter more than ideology, and
where results, rather than rhetoric, are given the most respect."
Sydney's The Daily Telegraph says transparency is needed when the NSW government tops
up by more than $50,000 the salary of the director-general of the Department of Premier
and Cabinet, Robyn Kruk.
In the 2005-06 financial year, her predecessor Col Gellatly was paid as much as Ms
Kruk before the latest pay rise.
No-one begrudges the salary increase, but where is the transparency?
The newspaper says: "As voters and taxpayers, surely we're entitled to know why senior
government bureaucrats have been granted seemingly disproportionate pay rises."
Melbourne's Herald Sun says most of Melbourne remains safe, but parts of the CBD and
some suburbs are plagued by bashings, knifings and unprovoked assaults on any night of
the week.
The newpaper says: "We are in the grip of a violence epidemic, fuelled by four persistent
factors: alcohol, groups of young males, illegal weapons and, increasingly, cultural differences
involving immigrant youths.
"Stronger policing can only tackle the symptoms, not the causes."
Melbourne's The Age says Mr Rudd's ministry bears his personal stamp and reflect the
priorities of his government. By its actions, his government will show what Labor stands
for and voters will judge whether it has rewarded their trust.
The newspaper says: "The Howard government had a rocky first term after 13 years in
opposition, and Mr Rudd and his team face an equally challenging adjustment, particularly
as global economic conditions look slightly less balmy than before.
"Even so, the adjustment to opposition is likely to prove at least as difficult for
Dr Nelson and the coalition, with the Nationals also having to find a new leader."
Both sides need to find their feet fast in their unfamiliar roles. All Australians
who desire good government -- of which effective scrutiny of policy and ministerial conduct
is a vital element -- must hope they do so.
Brisbane's The Courier-Mail says the way Mr Rudd governs will force people to re-evaluate
how they see Queensland, his home state.
Queenslanders conduct themselves in a very practical way, rooted in their past and
tied to the present by Australians moving in to seek a better life.
The newspaper says: "The state is a place where people do things. There has already
been commentary on the Prime Minister-elect's desire to govern from the centre and his
wish to be as inclusive as possible -- a very Queensland approach.
"It is founded in a political sense in the historic alliances between the regions and
the city, between rural workers and city workers -- and the necessity to find common ground."
Queensland'ts pragmatism is very simple and Queenslanders respond quickly to crises.
Its people expect governments to take a role and will tolerate governments letting them
down -- to a point. And then they are punished them severely.

Qld: Mayor puts welcome mat out for Beattie
By Dave Donaghy
PALM ISLAND, Qld, Dec 17 AAP - The new mayor of Palm Island has urged Queensland Premier
Peter Beattie to visit and help ease tensions over the decision not to charge the police
officer involved in a death in custody.
Delena Foster wants the premier to visit this week and explain the decision by Queensland
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Leanne Clare not to charge Senior Sergeant Chris
Hurley over the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee.
Sgt Hurley had been found by the state coroner to have inflicted fatal blows that killed
36-year-old Mulrunji at the island's police station in 2004.
Earlier today Mr Beattie said he would seek an explanation from the state's Solicitor-General
Walter Sofronoff QC for a report explaining how two very different verdicts could be made.
The report, which would only explain the legal process involved in handing out conflicting
verdicts and not condone one or the other, would first be presented to the Palm Island
people - possibly this week - before being released publicly, Mr Beattie said.
Ms Foster, who was elected mayor yesterday, said she would meet with Mr Beattie this
week but remained hopeful he would visit the island off north Queensland.
"I think it would be good if he did come (to Palm Island)," she said.
"It would show the government cared about Palm Island and wanted to hear the concerns
of residents.
"Too long there's been no one to listen. That's why we get frustrated."
Ms Foster said she would continue to ask for calm among residents angry over the DPP's decision.
A peaceful protest was held yesterday, during which alleged riot ringleader Lex Wotton
shook hands with the island's chief police officer, Senior Sergeant Paul James.
Preparations began today for another protest rally that is expected to be staged in
the island's centre square on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Ms Foster said today she had no problem working with the premier despite previously
being head of a council sacked by the state government in 2003.
Mr Beattie said he was confident of working toward a bright future for Palm Island
with Ms Foster.
"I just say to the mayor, what's gone is gone," he said in Brisbane.
"We can't change yesterday. We've got to move on.
"We need leadership on that island to work with us and the federal government to improve
their lives.
"I say to the mayor we are going to turn the page. I have offered my hand of friendship
and offer a new start."
Ms Foster - a campaigner against domestic violence - was returned to office by residents
after polling 152 votes to Acting Mayor Zac Sam's 128 votes.
About 600 of the island's 1,026 registered voters went to the polls yesterday.
Ms Foster said she would tackle the major problems of housing, unemployment and land
with great vigour.

TAS: Stolen generations legislation expected soon
HOBART, Aug 10 AAP - The Tasmanian government is expected to introduce legislation
soon to financially compensate Aborigines forcibly removed from their families.
Tasmanian Aboriginal Legal Centre legal director Michael Mansell said today legislation
to address the so-called stolen generations would be introduced after parliament resumed
at the end of this month.
Mr Mansell estimates up to 40 Aborigines will have a case for compensation, which is
hoped to be $100,000 for each person.
The government has not mentioned a figure, but Premier Paul Lennon has repeatedly affirmed
his commitment to resolve the stolen generations issue "once and for all".
Mr Lennon said in June he hoped to finalise payments by the end of the year.
Mr Mansell said no amount of money would be adequate to compensate the stolen generations,
but $100,000 was a realistic figure.
"... it doesn't matter whether its $1 or $1 million it's not going to be adequate,"
he told ABC Radio.
"It's time to strike a balance and time to say here's a sufficient amount of money
so we don't trivialise what happened to these members of the stolen generations but at
the same time trying to work within a realistic framework of the amount of compensation
that a government could pay to the people."
Mr Mansell said a "lack of moral will" had left other states lagging on the issue of
reconciliation.
"I think the capacity of the states on the mainland to pay for the stolen generations
is far greater than that of Tasmania and it's only their lack of moral will, I think,
that's made Tasmania move forward while the other states have done nothing," he said.
Tasmania is the only state to have agreed to financial compensation for Aborigines
forcibly removed from their families by Australian government agencies and church missions
between about 1900 and 1972.
In Tasmania, Aboriginal children were removed under general child welfare legislation.

NSW: Tougher fines flagged to curb tobacco advertising
SYDNEY, April 4 AAP - Penalties for breaching tobacco advertising laws will be substantially
increased in NSW, with repeat offenders facing fines of up to $1 million.
The changes to the Public Health Act were flagged today by NSW Health Minister John Hatzistergos.
They aim to deter tobacco companies from sidestepping legislation preventing tobacco
advertising through the sponsorship of concerts and events often aimed at young people.
Fines for first time offenders will be increased from $22,000 to $660,000, with second
offences attracting fines from $44,000 to $1 million.
Mr Hatzistergos said the changes were made partly in response to the "paltry" fines
against tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris in 2002 after it breached tobacco advertising
laws by staging a fashion awards event in Sydney.
"The fine against the company was a paltry $9,000, while an associated promotional
company, Wavesnet, was fined $15,000," Mr Hatzistergos said in a statement.
"That is hardly a deterrent for such huge corporations...
"The new laws will deter big tobacco companies from sidestepping legislation, through
promotional events, concerts and nightclubs."
In other proposed amendments to the Act, selling tobacco from cars, trailers, stalls
or market stands will also be banned.

Fed: Govt backbenchers support Qantas
CANBERRA, Dec 6 AAP - Coalition backbenchers have expressed their strong support for
Qantas as cabinet prepares to decide whether to allow Singapore Airlines to compete on
the lucrative trans-Pacific route.
Cabinet is expected to decide before the end of the year whether to open the route,
a move which would see Singapore Airlines compete with Qantas.
Several coalition backbench MPs and senators today offered support for Qantas during
a joint partyroom meeting.
A partyroom spokesman said a number of backbenchers expressed "strong support for their
(Qantas') position here in Australia, in regional ports, job creation etc."
The spokesman said none of the backbenchers mentioned Singapore Airlines, but it was
implied they feared an impact on Qantas if the trans-Pacific route was opened.
"Some of the regional members who obviously have Qantas as operating either service
facilities or international flights recognised the importance that they play in their
communities," he said.
Cabinet's decision on the trans-Pacific route, Qantas' most profitable, comes after
the execution in Singapore of convicted Australian drug trafficker Nguyen Tuong Van.
In the leadup to the execution there were calls for the government to use trade as
a means of pressuring Singapore to commute the sentence.
Qantas opposes any move to allow extra carriers onto the lucrative route it now shares
with US carrier United Airlines.

It was told during hearings in Townsville yesterday that a Russian refugee with fake
qualifications treated hundreds of patients as a psychiatrist at Townsville Hospital.
The hospital's executive director of medical services Dr ANDREW JOHNSON said he discovered
Dr VINCENT BERG's qualifications were false in late 2002.
This was almost two years after the man left the hospital amid concerns about his competence.
Dr JOHNSON said he sent briefings to then health minister Ms EDMOND And general manager
of health services Dr STEVE BUCKLAND, but was warned by them to keep quiet.
State Opposition leader LAWRENCE SPRINGBORG has called for Ms EDMOND to tell the inquiry
about why the facts were publicly revealed only yesterday.
Ms EDMOND quit as health minister in 2003 and left politics last year.

Bush warns China.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
US President George W Bush yesterday expressed "deep concerns" about freedom and human rights in China, during his visit to attend the Beijing Olympic Games. In a weekly radio address that was broadly positive about US-Chinese relations, the US leader said his four-day visit to attend the Olympic Games had reinforced his belief that China must accept greater freedoms."During my time here, I'm expressing America's deep concerns about freedom and human rights in China," he said."This trip has reaffirmed my belief that men and women who aspire to speak their conscience and worship their God are no threat to the future of China."It was the fourth time in as many days that Bush had raised the sensitive issue of China's human rights record in public despite a pledge not to politicise his visit to the Olympics.
Bush is to speak again on religious freedom today when he attends a Protestant church in Beijing just hours before meeting Chinese President Hu Jintao. Bush has promised to raise human rights discreetly in his discussions.China reacted robustly to comments Bush made earlier this week on the subject, telling the United States not to interfere in China's internal affairs.Bush said his government had been working with China on a number of major international issues such as the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, but he also suggested China needed to reform elements of foreign policy."We've emphasised that being a global economic leader carries with it the duty to act responsibly on matters from energy to the environment to development in Africa," he said.Bush has been treading a delicate diplomatic line over the past month as he navigated between calls from human rights groups for a tough stance on China and Beijing's insistence the Games should not be about politics. The White House has already protested at China's treatment of international activists who are pressing Beijing to exert its influence over Sudan to end the conflict in Darfur.

Study Results from H. Hori and Colleagues Broaden Understanding of Schizophrenia.
"Little is known about possible differences in the attitudes toward schizophrenia between the general public and various healthcare professionals. After screening for the study enrollment, 197 subjects in the general population, 100 psychiatric staff (other than psychiatrists), 112 physicians (other than psychiatrists) and 36 psychiatrists were enrolled in a web-based survey using an Internet-based questionnaire format," scientists in Tokyo, Japan report.
"To assess subjects' attitudes toward schizophrenia, we used a 13-item questionnaire created by Ucok et al. (2006), to which five items were added. These 18 items were subjected to exploratory factor analysis, which yielded three factors classified as ''stigma,'' ''underestimation of patients' abilities,'' and ''skepticism regarding treatment.'' These factors were compared between the four groups using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), controlling for potential confounders. The ANCOVA for the ''stigma'' factor showed that psychiatrists scored significantly lower than the other three groups. The ANCOVA for the ''underestimation of patients' abilities'' factor revealed that psychiatric staff scored significantly lower than the general population. The present results indicated that attitudes toward schizophrenia consist of at least three separable factors," wrote H. Hori and colleagues.
The researchers concluded: "Psychiatrists had the least negative attitudes toward schizophrenia, which was followed by the psychiatric staff, and attitudes of the general population and of physicians were equally stigmatizing."
Hori and colleagues published their study in Psychiatry Research (Attitudes toward schizophrenia in the general population, psychiatric staff, physicians, and psychiatrists: A web-based survey in Japan. Psychiatry Research, 2011;186(2-3):183-189).

Travel warnings might surprise you; Check out U.S. State Department travel advisories before heading beyond our borders.(TRAVEL)
Byline: KERRI WESTENBERG; STAFF WRITER
Fred and Karen Walker of Minneapolis watched on television as protesters took to the streets of Cairo, and their hearts sank. They knew that their long-planned February vacation to the Land of the Pharaohs was doomed.
"It is silly to go on a trip if all you're going to see are tanks and burning cars," said Fred Walker.
While scenes of the uprising blasted across TV screens, there was a subtler indication of Egypt's growing instability: The U.S. State Department had issued a travel alert Jan. 28, three days after the first demonstrations, and upgraded that last Sunday to a travel warning that urged U.S. citizens to avoid travel to the country.
Egypt may be the most obvious country to warrant concern, but it is far from the only one. Mexico, Kenya and Nepal are among 31 countries that have garnered State Department travel warnings, which make travelers aware of dangers they might not have expected and suggest ways to reduce risk.
Travel alerts are for short-term events such as demonstrations or an outbreak of H1N1. Warnings are issued due to unstable government, intense crime or frequent terrorist attacks, and when "we want you to know the risks of traveling to these places and to strongly consider not going to them at all," according to the State Department website. The site, at www.travel.state.gov, lists all alerts and warnings and offers detailed descriptions of countries worldwide, including traffic safety, medical facilities, entry and exit requirements, crime and security. Travelers can also call the State Department for such information at 1-888-407-4747.
Even popular spots, where most Americans travel without problem, can offer surprises at the website. The information on Mexico, for instance, warns that drug-related violence has increased in Acapulco, some of it in areas frequented by tourists; that Mazatlan has seen a surge in violent crime, and that "rape and sexual assault continue to be serious problems in Cancun and other resort areas."
Warnings should be read closely not only for safety information, but also because it may pertain only to certain areas. In Mexico, violent crime is most prevalent at the border with the United States. The travel warning issued for the country doesn't mention Cancun or Acapulco, but suggests that U.S. citizens defer unnecessary travel to Michoacan and Tamaulipas and to parts of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Durango and Coahuila. The warning also says, "Millions of U.S. citizens safely visit Mexico each year. ... The Mexican government makes a considerable effort to protect U.S. citizens and other visitors to major tourist destinations." It notes ways to bolster safety, such as traveling on main roads during daytime hours and minimizing displays of wealth.
"We think it is important as U.S. citizens that we use [the State Department website] as a source," said Lori Moline, co-owner of CrossingBorders, a Bloomington travel company that organizes faith-based tours to Israel and other Mideast countries. All people traveling with the organization sign a form indicating that they've read the State Department warning for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza as part of the registration process.
"I'd encourage people, especially independent travelers, to pay attention to what the warnings are saying about government personnel who are working there. When personnel or families have been encouraged to leave or avoid certain areas, that is a pretty significant statement," said Moline, who has been parsing the warnings for years. U.S. embassy personnel are allowed into the West Bank only for approved missions, for example, and are restricted to certain roads there. In Colombia, they can travel between major cities usually only by air. The State Department ordered the departure of all non-emergency personnel and family members from Egypt when riots turned violent last week.
Moline also ensures that her clients are registered with the State Department through its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (travelregistration.state.gov). The service helps the department contact citizens if there is a crisis where they are traveling. It's best to register before departure, especially because some volatile situations leave travelers without Internet access, as was the case in Egypt when the government there blocked cell phone and Internet use.

Gordon appoints Snyder as 'Open Records Officer'.
Byline: John E. Usalis
Jan. 10--GORDON -- The Borough of Gordon has a new "Open Records Officer" to comply with Pennsylvania's "New Right-To-Know Law." During Monday's meeting, Gordon Borough Council designated Paul L. Snyder, who serves as the borough's secretary/treasurer and borough manager, as its first open records officer. The resolution to appoint Snyder and establish the criteria the borough must follow to comply with the new law was passed unanimously. The law, passed by the state legislature and signed by Gov. Ed Rendell on Feb. 14, 2008, went into effect Jan. 1, provides "for access to public information, for a designated open records officer in each commonwealth agency, local agency, judicial agency and legislative agency, for procedure, for appeal of agency determination, for judicial review and for the Office of Open Records; imposing penalties; providing for reporting by state-related institutions; requiring the posting of certain state contract information on the Internet; and making related repeals." In explaining the resolution, borough solicitor Mark Semanchick said, "Since he (Snyder) is the custodian of your municipal records, he would be the most appropriate to respond. The resolution identifies what the business hours, the costs, the process the open records officer will follow, the right of appeal should any request be denied, and all the sections that must be considered as part of the new act." "My question is who do I call to find out what I don't need to reply to," asked Snyder. "I think it's fair to say that you should assume generally that whatever is being requested should be made available," Semanchick replied. "There are exceptions, and they are very specific." "That's what I'm asking about," said Snyder. Semanchick will supply Snyder with a summary of the law that will include the specific exceptions. According to the www.openrecordspa.org Web site, the new law accomplishes three major things: --For the first time, establishes that all records kept by local and state government are presumed to be open to the public, with some exceptions. No longer is access restricted to just "accounts, vouchers or contracts" or "minutes, orders or decisions." --For the first time, puts the burden of proving why a record should not be released on government agencies. No longer do citizens who are denied records have to prove why they should have them. --For the first time, there is an independent agency charged with arbitrating open records disputes. No longer do citizens have to go to court when they feel their request has been unjustly denied. The state's new Office of Open Records, under the direction of executive director Terry Mutchler, will hear appeals and issue rulings when there are disputes. And, although the new law went into effect Jan. 1, records from any year were newly available as of that date. Gordon's resolution stipulates the following criteria:
--All documents deemed public records will be available for inspection, retrieval and duplication at the borough office during established business hours (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.), with the exception of weekends and holidays. --Requests should be made in writing to Snyder on a form provided by the borough. --Paper copies are 25 cents per page per side. The certification of a record is $1 per record. Specialized documents, including, but not limited to, blueprints, color copies and non-standard-sized documents, will be charged the actual cost of production. If mailing is requested, the cost of postage will be charged. The borough will require prepayments if the total fees are estimated to exceed $100.
--The borough will make a good-faith effort to provide the requested public record(s) as promptly as possible. The open records officer will cooperate with those requesting records to review and/or duplicate original borough documents while taking reasonable measure to protect borough documents from the possibility of theft, damage and/or modification.
--The open records officer will review all written requests for access to public records. As soon as possible, but no later than five business days after receiving a written request to access public records, the open records officer will respond to such requests in writing consistent with the act. --If access to a record is denied, the response will include a reason for the denial. --If the request is denied, the requester may file an appeal with Office of Open Records Executuve Director Terry Mulcher in Harrisburg. Appeals of criminal records should be made to Schuylkill County District Attorney James Goodman at the county courthouse in Pottsville. --Appeals must be filed within 15 business days of the mailing date of the borough's response or within 15 business days of a deemed denial, with the appeal stating the grounds why the record is a public record and should addresses any grounds stated by the borough for delaying or denying the request.

Fall Focus: Making Media Meaningful to Address Media Personalization and Consumer Habits.
DALLAS -- Parks Associates today announced the preliminary topics for Fall Focus: Making Media Meaningful, an executive conference on media personalization and consumer habits that will take place Nov. 9-11, 2005, at the Fairmont San Jose in Calif.
Hosted annually by Parks Associates, Fall Focus: Making Media Meaningful will address changing consumer habits in this era of digital entertainment and media personalization. The event will feature industry-leading speakers who will discuss in an interactive environment the opportunities, successes, and obstacles in this evolving digital domain.
"The notions of media personalization and easy access have changed significantly from the days of the remote control and car radio presets," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst for Parks Associates. "Fall Focus will provide attendees with analysis and commentary from many companies shaping the future of media delivery and consumption. Attendees will leave with a fresh perspective on the critical role of the consumer in determining the success of new solutions for both self-created and commercial media."
Fall Focus sessions will address the following issues, among others:
--Does having high-quality digital content at home decrease the consumer's propensity to go to movies and concerts?
--Does ownership of wireless technology affect other consumer habits -- TV viewing or consumption of music, movies, and news?
--Do easy access to local information and the ability to buy movie tickets online tend to increase, decrease, or have no effect on movie attendance and movie rentals?
--If consumers have the ability to skip commercials, do they actually use it? If so, how can advertisers reach these consumers?
--In an era of pop-up ads, spam, product placements, and additional advertising beyond the traditional broadcast model, which methods are working, and which need adjustment?
--Since digital technology allows for the creation of identical high-quality copies of commercial content, are people getting what they want from friends or family, or does the increased exposure to high-quality content increase their purchase of DVDs?
--What influences changes in consumer habits? Are changing habits a combination of product and Internet, a function of Internet alone, a function of comfort and time with these new tools, or some combination of the above?
--Are there specific market segments that based on discovered habits, demographics, or product ownership patterns show predictable patterns in the acquisition and use of today's advanced products and services?
Keynotes, presentations, and discussions at this event will cover topics such as software tools for media editing and sharing, new designs and functionality for user interfaces (both graphic and physical), the growing role of niche content, and the changing nature of advertising and marketing in the digital age. Parks Associates is currently accepting speaker submissions through the Call For Papers form at www.fallfocus.com. Deadline to submit is July 28, 2005.
Fall Focus events host 250-300 executives and provide a full analysis and evaluation of the "focus" topic. Early sponsors for Fall Focus 2005 include Gold Sponsor Entropic Communications and Silver Sponsor Digital 5, Inc. For more information on attending this event or participating as a sponsor, visit www.fallfocus.com.

Armchair Aviators Fulfill Their Fantasies with Flight Simulator Software.
Byline: Mary Lou Pickel
Nov. 28--Paul Higginbotham scans the flat Florida terrain from the pilot's seat of his Cessna 182.
He just took off from Cedar Key, Fla., in balmy 89-degree weather. Blue seas break against the beach as he climbs to 2,500 feet.
The flight is progressing smoothly when a strange noise enters the cockpit. It's the sound of workmen building Higginbotham's house addition. Then Higginbotham's white cat races by.
The illusion is shattered. Higginbotham is back in the real world at his dining room table in Peachtree City, looking at a computer screen and using a joystick to control his virtual plane.
Scores of flight simulator enthusiasts --- don't call them gamers --- take vicarious flights every day in metro Atlanta. Many, like Higginbotham, work in aviation or have a pilot's license.
Most use Microsoft Flight Simulator, one of the biggest-selling entertainment software programs ever conceived. The giant technology company has sold 21 million copies in the past decade. It recently issued an update, subtitled "Century of Flight," to take advantage of the hoopla surrounding the upcoming Wright brothers' 100th anniversary of flight on Dec. 17. It includes virtual versions of various historic planes, including the Wright Flyer.
Flight Simulator has spawned a huge online community of spinoff sites, shareware and add-on products.
Enthusiasts can join virtual airlines online, receive flight schedules and respond to instructions from virtual air traffic controllers. A Flowery Branch man flies online with a friend from Tennessee, talking on the radio back and forth. A retired Delta pilot in Cobb County puts on his 3-D glasses and jumps back into the cockpit.
Flight Simulator aircraft, which range from Cessnas to Boeing 747s, are as difficult to maneuver as the real planes --- more or less --- and include realistic engine sounds.
Higginbotham, 44, flies about 14 hours a week. He's taking his Cessna around the country and started in Maine two months ago.
"My wife knows this is an obsession with me," the Delta Air Lines mechanic explains.
"I don't drink, and I don't smoke," he adds. "My wife says it keeps me off the streets."
On a recent morning at his house, he switched from the Cessna to a Learjet and glided over the Ford plant in Hapeville to land at Hartsfield-Jackson International. His landing wasn't perfect. The plane slid off into the grass beside the runway but quickly recovered.
Pilot friends have given Higginbotham old approach plates for every airport in the world, and he has navigational charts that help him set his course.
Higginbotham also likes to tool around in a Lockheed Vega 5B (pilot Wiley Post flew one around the world in 1931), a McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom fighter ("You can go really fast in this thing") and a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter ("I love vertical flight").
Higginbotham used to fly hot-air balloons and says his goal is to take a few helicopter lessons.
"I know I could jump right in and fly it. I just have the feel for it."
Flight simulation software was created by a company called Sublogic in the 1980s. Microsoft later bought the program, which has become a huge business in itself.
The latest version comes on four compact discs and contains 5 million lines of code. Teams of flight engineers, pilots, navigation data companies and artists work to create the most realistic flight experience possible, Microsoft spokesman Darryl Saunders said.
The open architecture allows fans to add planes and scenery from the Internet.
Steve Halpern, 43, of Atlanta has built a business around that idea. He first started using Flight Simulator in 1993 and was dissatisfied with the quality of the clouds. They were too two-dimensional, like billboards.
His quest to create a better virtual cloud developed into a company called Flight1.com. Halpern and his six associates now create virtual planes, cockpits and scenery and distribute it from a Marietta warehouse as well as online commerce sites here and abroad. The company sold at least 50,000 units last year.
"It's a great little fantasy world," Halpern says. "It becomes a way of life for many people. This becomes their main hobby."
Chris Buff, a 43-year-old computer consultant in Suwanee, decided to create a reproduction of a Lockheed L-188 Electra. He's one of the many freeware creators.
More than 8,000 people have downloaded his plane so far, he says. "I've received feedback from people in Brazil, Taiwan, England, Holland, Canada and Australia. You find out that people all over the world share that same passion and sense of awe about flight. It really has a universal appeal."
Some "simmers" around the country supplant their joysticks with real yokes, rudder pedals, throttles and even multiple screens. The New York Times recently featured a California man who acquired an entire Boeing 737 nose, put it in a shed and set up his simulator inside.
Buff has the yoke and pedals but draws the line there.
"Even I look at some things and think, 'I don't think so.' "

Emulex Announces Support for Cisco Data Center Fabric with Comprehensive High-Performance Connectivity and Management.
Emulex OneConnect UCNAs and LightPulse HBAs Support New Cisco Nexus Switches and new Nexus and MDS Multihop FCoE Modules
COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the leader in converged networking solutions, today announced that its OneConnect[TM] 10Gb Ethernet (10GbE) Universal Converged Network Adapters (UCNAs) and LightPulse[R] 8Gb/s Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) support the enhanced Cisco Data Center Fabric, announced this week as a culmination of three years of innovation.
"Cisco continues to help drive network convergence in the data center, particularly with new director-class, multihop FCoE capabilities that will bring convergence to life for more enterprises today," said Shaun Walsh, vice president of marketing, Emulex. "Leveraging Emulex connectivity within the enhancements offered by Cisco's Data Center Fabric help enable customers to take advantage of the high-performance connectivity they're accustomed to, while protecting existing infrastructure investments."
Cisco continues to tightly integrate Unified Computing, Unified Fabric, and Unified Network Services into the holistic Cisco Data Center Fabric designed to be simple, scalable and secure, delivering any application across any location, within the data center, across data centers, or to the cloud.
Cisco Unified Fabric delivers network management convergence and "wire once" agility from the server to the storage array for physical and virtualized environments. Emulex connectivity solutions are supported across the following enhanced technology innovations components of the Cisco Data Center Fabric, a tightly integrated, flexible, high-performance, highly secure, shared infrastructure:
* OneConnect UCNA support for Cisco Nexus 7000: Emulex OneConnect UCNAs support Cisco Nexus 7000 Series, Cisco's flagship Ethernet Storage Director that now provides Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) support for the first time. Emulex OneConnect adapters offer multiprotocol support and hardware offload, which removes the overhead from the CPU and helps enable more virtual machines (VMs) per server.
* OneConnect UCNA and LightPulse 8Gb/s HBA support for Cisco Nexus 5500: Emulex provides comprehensive support for the enhanced Cisco Nexus 5500 fixed switches, enabling flexibility for customers to leverage their existing SAN connectivity investments, and utilize Emulex OneConnect UCNAs for protocol-agnostic connectivity. With Unified Ports, a multiprotocol universal port design, customers now have the flexibility to use either an HBA or UCNA adapter to meet their ever-changing data center needs.
* Support for Adapter FEX and VM FEX within Cisco Nexus 5548UP and 5596UP Switches: Emulex also plans to support the new AdapterFEX and VM FEX functionality across the new Cisco Nexus 5548UP and 5596UP Switches. AdapterFEX helps enable partitioning of a physical server NIC into multiple logical NICs, while VM FEX offers these capabilities to virtual machines.
* OneConnect UCNA support for enhanced Cisco MDS 9000 switches: Emulex UCNAs support the new MDS 9000 Series Multilayer Switches. FCoE Module, which offers increased bandwidth and seamless interoperability with the Nexus platform, while bridging Converged Networks to FC SANs.
* Broad management support across Cisco Nexus and MDS switches: Emulex OneCommand(TM) Management Framework help enable IT managers to manage their adapters across any platform. Leveraging open APIs, the Emulex OneCommand Management Framework supports the new converged management solution from Cisco, for a 'single pane of glass' view into data center connectivity.
"Cisco, together with our technology partners, are arming customers with a powerful, flexible, cloud-ready infrastructure enabling the next-generation data center," said Jackie Ross, vice president of Marketing, Server Access and Virtualization Technology Group for Cisco. "Emulex's comprehensive portfolio of adapters are the multiprotocol 'glue' connecting servers to the network and the network to storage arrays."
Emulex OneConnect UCNAs provide optimized 10GbE network performance with Emulex vEngine(TM) technology. Emulex vEngine technology offers full hardware protocol offload support for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), iSCSI and FCoE and optimizes virtualized servers with support for virtual queues, multiple NIC PCI functions and emerging Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) standards. This results in 20% more virtual machines (VMs) per server to optimize infrastructure investment.
Emulex LightPulse 8Gb/s Fibre Channel HBAs offer the throughput, scalability, and reliability necessary for I/O intensive applications and high-density virtual server environments. Emulex LightPulse HBAs offer common drivers and virtual HBA technology based on industry-standard N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), which provides VMs with independent access to the SAN through shared HBA resources, enabling customers to leverage critical SAN management tools and best practices within virtualized server environments.
The Emulex LightPulse and OneConnect[TM] families of storage and network adapters are available across a wide portfolio of Cisco solutions, offering wide interoperability and management support.
