Fed: Burke elected as ACT MLA

CANBERRA, Feb 10 AAP - Liberal Jacqui Burke's short political career was reignitedtoday when - for the second time - she was officially declared elected to take over froma retiring MLA in Canberra.

Mrs Burke fills the casual vacancy in the ACT Legislative Assembly left by former ACTchief minister Gary Humphries, who takes over from the retiring Margaret Reid as an ACTsenator in federal parliament.

Mrs Burke was a Member for Molonglo for nine months in 2001 after another former chiefminister, Kate Carnell, retired.

She won office again this year on a countback of voters' preferences from the 2001 election.

Mrs Burke's background is in small business and she has previously worked for the AustralianChamber of Commerce and the ACT Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

She will be sworn in to the ACT Legislative Assembly on March 4.
